If you’re trying to create a quick fix for something or save money, there are certain things you can’t cut corners on. Doing some of these things may bring down the value of your home if you plan on selling later on or could cause serious damage that ends up costing way more than you ever intended. Take a look at our list of DON’Ts when taking home matters into your own hands.

  1. Getting rid of your only tub

If you only have one bathtub in your home, KEEP IT. While a walk-in shower may be your dream, it may not be a future buyer’s. If you intend on selling later on, a house without a tub could be a deal-breaker for someone with young children or pets.

  1. Leaving cabinet doors on while painting

Even professional painters detach cabinet doors before painting them. It is just one more minor step to ensure that your paint job turns out smoothly. Even though it’s time consuming, it will create a big “wow” for guests and potential buyers if you list your home in the future.

  1. Planting trees close to your house

Many homeowners don’t think about the long-term effects of planting large trees close to the house. Depending on the size, mature roots can weaken the home’s foundation over time and clog plumbing and sewer pipes. On top of this, you will risk falling limbs during storms which pose a safety hazard and potential damage issues.  When planting medium and large trees, start 30-50 feet away from the home.

  1. Painting exterior brick

Paint chokes brick, which needs to breathe. It can destroy the brick and mortar and cause it to crumble. If you’re ready for a new exterior color, try a brick stain instead as it will bond with the brick.

  1. Letting ceiling fans run constantly

Ceiling fans make you feel cooler, but they don’t actually decrease the temperature in a room. It’s only beneficial to run them while the room is occupied. Save money on power bills by turning them off when not in the room.
