Is your family ready to grow? Pets are a wonderful companion that can bring extreme joy to your home. This weekend, Columbia County Animal Services is holding a Saturday Pet Adoption from 11:00am until 2:00pm. All pets are different in terms of feeding needs, behavior, time and more. Before heading to the Animal Services building to pick out your new furry friend, consider these things to make the best choice:
Are you okay with a dog or a cat that sheds? If so, you’ll have a variety of choices at the animal shelter. Be prepared to keep a stock of lint rollers and use the vacuum regularly to keep your floors looking and smelling fresh.
Interaction with Children
Are there children in the home? A pet’s compatibility with children is a big factor in determining whether or not they will be a good fit for your family. A volunteer at the shelter can usually assist you in answering questions based on their time and observation with each animal.
Indoors or Outdoors
Will you plan to keep your pet indoors? If the pet will be outdoors at any time, is your yard enclosed and safe for them to roam around? Are you prepared for the extra cleaning that will come with your pet?
Your pet may need to be spayed and neutered. On top of this, you should be prepared for any emergency that could arise. Be sure to have some finances set aside to cover any and all veterinary needs for your pet.
Are you away from home often for travel or work? Be sure you have someone that can be designated to check on and take care of your pet while you are gone. The pet may even be able to travel with you; some hotels are pet-friendly.
These are just a few of the many questions you should ask before adopting a new pet. Take your time to think about it and enjoy all of the sweet memories that will come with your new furry friend!
