How to Organize Your New Home

Moving into a new home is a blank slate for your life and all of your belongings. Don’t let clutter take over right away, but instead try to unpack in an organized manner for both your sanity and overall cleanliness. Start life in your new home off the right way by creating positive habits as you unpack.

Pack an essentials box.

You don’t want to be frantically searching for simple necessities on moving day, so store them all in a box that’s easily accessible with everything you need. This could include anything from paper goods to important documents that may be needed right away. If you’re moving with a child or pet, don’t forget their favorite toy so they’re not missing it for too long.

Set this box aside in your car so that you don’t have to dig through the moving truck to locate it.

Plan ahead.

Don’t try to rush moving in one day or weekend. This is one of the most common mistakes new homeowners make and it’s the reason unwanted clutter ends up in drawers and closets around the home. Try to plan a few free days or a week to fully unpack and make sure everything is in its place, and unnecessary clutter can be donated or thrown away.

Unpack each room by level of importance.

Your essentials box can contain a few items from each room if necessary, but don’t let that get you into a pattern of organizing that ends up in more of a mess than intended. Make a list of each room by usage and unpack accordingly. For example, the kitchen and restrooms may be first, followed by each individual bedroom with the garage and outdoor storage being last.

Make labels your friend.

You don’t have to own a fancy label maker for this- blank stickers or tags and permanent marker will do just fine. For areas that hold a ton of items, like the pantry, keep them organized by category in small baskets or bins with labels on the front to locate them easily when needed.

Plan to decorate last.

You don’t want to get so caught up in decor that you forget to unpack and leave boxes all over the place. Get every piece of furniture settled first to be sure it’s where you want it, then decorate accordingly. It’s much easier to shift a chair or table than to repair holes in the wall so you can move a painting.

Moving into a new home is exciting, but it can be easily overwhelming. Just focus on each room by priority and declutter as you go. Before you know it, your house will truly feel like a home.
