Now, more than ever, the world needs more smiles and joy. The official World Smile Day is October 2nd this year and is the perfect time to spread love and kindness to those around you.
World Smile Day originated after Harvey Ball created the classic yellow smiley face in 1963 that we all know and love. It is one day devoted to performing acts of kindness and spreading cheer throughout the world. The first official World Smile Day was held in 1999 beginning in Harvey Ball’s hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. The smiley face is unifying and Ball aimed to have one day each year where people all over the world can put aside their differences and remember the similarities they have to each other.
Why should you smile? Smiling releases endorphins, causing feelings of happiness in you and for those around you. It shows that you care and brings light to a dark world.
One way to celebrate World Smile Day is simply by committing a random act of kindness. Whether it be to someone you know, a stranger, or signing up to volunteer with a local organization that helps those in need, there are plenty of things you can do to help spread joy in your community. It can even be as simple as paying for the person behind you in the drive-thru that day. Anything charitable outside of your personal bubble can spread cheer to both you and others.
Another great way to celebrate is by sending smiling selfies to those you love. You never know when your smile may brighten someone’s day! Since we are still in the midst of a pandemic and wearing masks most of the time, sending a picture to a loved one whether by text or mail will be something they can enjoy permanently and socially-distanced. Share your smile on social media as well with the hashtag #WorldSmileDay.
Jokes are a good way to bring out the smiles in others. If you’re cutting up with coworkers during a free moment, tell some jokes to distract them from the everyday motions. It may be the joJoy they need at that specific moment! If you are around little ones, teach them new jokes and watch their eyes light up with wonder as you make them smile.
Don’t forget that a smile can truly change the world. During these trying times, we need more joy and happiness. How will you celebrate World Smile Day?
