No matter where you are in experience, it’s important to have a checklist that keeps you on track and prepared for the holiday. Here’s what you should know about hosting to make things run smoothly this Thanksgiving.
Accept any and all help.
The beauty of Thanksgiving is that it’s typically a potluck-style event with family members and friends bringing different dishes for everyone to enjoy. Don’t try to take on the task of making every single dish alone- instead, when someone asks what they can bring, let them know what you need and be truthful! You could even set up a list ahead of time via text or email so everyone can keep track of who is bringing what.
Prep what you can ahead of time.
Avoid a last-minute rush and have everything ready by the time your guests sit down for the meal. When you have the menu together, see which recipes can be completed ahead of time and schedule 2-3 days before Thanksgiving to get those dishes made.
Avoid new recipes.
The last thing you need is trying out a new recipe the week of Thanksgiving and taking the risk of it not being successful. Stick with the tried and true classics that Thanksgiving is known for and save your experimenting time for a non-holiday.
Start prepping early.
A week or two before Thanksgiving, pull out all of your cooking and serving dishes that are needed, silverware and utensils that need to be washed, and table decor you plan on using. This will keep you from scrambling for it the day of.
Set the table early.
The night before Thanksgiving, lay out your tablecloth, plates and utensils for all guests. There is no need to fuss with it the day of and you will wake up feeling relaxed and ready to go.
Have beverages ready.
Wine, cocktails, soda, tea, you name it- have drinks prepared for when guests arrive. They won’t be bored waiting for food with a drink in hand and conversation with other family and friends, giving you a few extra minutes to put everything together if needed.
