A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to make a drastic change to any room in your home. It can typically be done quickly and fairly inexpensively. However, you can think outside of the box (or your four walls) and make a statement with bold patterns or colors. If you’re looking to make a big change in your home, take a few simple steps to turn any room into a masterpiece.
Before painting any walls, make sure you clean them and lay drop cloths on the floor to protect the flooring. Cover the baseboards and trim with painters tape and add paint primer to the walls if needed.
Try an Easy Pattern
Freehand wall painting is a trend quickly sweeping the social media accounts of home improvement gurus and interior decorators. While it may seem overwhelming, it’s actually more simple than you may think. Decide on a pattern such as dots or dashes and sketch them onto the wall with a pencil. Then, take an angled brush with a small amount of paint and trace your pencil sketch starting at an upper corner and working your way across and down. Don’t worry about varying strokes or the perfect spacing- a little imperfection is okay here!
To add some architectural character to the room, paint an arch accent. Place a piece of string on the wall and pull it taut while trading a semi-circular shape around it. Then, bring the lines straight down the wall and mark them with painters tape. You can fill most of it with a paint roller and use a small brush around the edges for detailing.
This one is perfect for a child’s room or playroom. Mark off triangular shapes with painters tape and fill them in with any color you desire. So simple, yet it creates a fun and bold statement!
This design will add dimension to the room and is much easier to achieve than installing molding or trim to create a contrast. All you have to do is mark the paint line using a level and painters tape, then paint either the bottom or top area to get that color-block style.
Sunset Accent Wall
If you want to bring a little piece of paradise to your home, blend different shades of blue and coral. Gather about six paint colors that are similar enough to seamlessly blend together. Then, use painters tape to divide the wall into six horizontal pieces. Start with the darkest shade of coral on the lowest part and lightly blend it out towards the top while the paint is still wet. Paint the next section in the next shade, repeating while blending each time. This will achieve a layered look that will make you feel like you’re peering out onto a beautiful ocean sunset.
This is another great pattern idea for a child’s room or playroom. Use painters tape and a level to create equally spaced horizontal lines and paint inside the taped sections, then remove when dry.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with trendy colors and patterns. If you grow out of love for it, you can always change it later on without spending a ton of money or worrying about clutter!
