ceramic sculpture art in SS office
I create ceramic sculptures that capture an inner beauty and humor found in the effects of clay and glaze. From architectonic to biomorphic in appearance, I build these sculptures as a familiar form with the intention to disrupt that familiarity. I do this through an intuitive and playful approach. Playing with color and surfaces allows me to materialize a microcosm of enticing textures and nuanced openings for the viewer to confront. These works are from a larger group of work titled Spaces In-between. This piece, titled Walking Through, is made of several handmade extruded clay coils which were then finished with a lightly textured blue glaze. Each one is its’ own pocket of space. They entwine within themselves and follow a circular movement, a movement I relate to my own acts of moving or walking through space. My aim through my work is that we learn to attune ourselves to the more nuanced places in our lives. In playing with our sense of memory and place, we re-sensitize ourselves to appreciate the world we inhabit.
