Are you a single home renter thinking about purchasing a home of your own in Richmond County, GA? You’re not alone. A wave of economic forces over the course of the last century such as greater affluence, longer life spans, later ages of marriage and higher divorce rates have shifted people’s mindsets about when to buy a home.

A century ago, fewer than six percent of households consisted of people who lived alone, a share significantly dominated by men. Fast forward to 2015. That percentage has risen to 28 percent, and women now head 54 percent of all single-person households. In larger cities such as Atlanta, single person households account for upwards of 45 percent of all households.

Who is behind this swelling of one-person households? Well, according to The Los Angeles Times, the younger generation no longer views marriage as a prerequisite to a mortgage. About 28 percent of all single-person households are under the age of 45. However, single-living is not reserved for the young. Adults of all ages are choosing to live alone, and an increasing number of them not only choose to occupy a home alone, but to own their own home. Fifty percent of all single households are owner occupied, which means going forward we can expect significant changes to single family home designs.

In order to accommodate the single-adult household boom, floor plans will need to be more flexible to adapt to a single’s frequently changing lifestyle and living arrangements. Work and living space will evolve to reflect the growing number of entrepreneurs working from home. Affordability will be important as well since single home buyers will have less income per household than dual-earner couples. And finally, housing developments will need to embed elements of community in order to address the social aspects singles want.
