Summer is a great time to be out on the deck. While we are still practicing social distancing, it’s likely that you’ll be enjoying the time at home even more than usual. If your deck isn’t a place of relaxation, take a look around and see how you can spruce it up to create an outdoor oasis. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Restore and Repair

A worn, weathered or damaged deck could put a damper on your summer enjoyment. Don’t invest heavily in new decor if the deck itself needs some TLC. Broken boards may need replacing or it may just need a good refinish. If it’s in your budget, make the necessary repairs before splurging on decorative items.

Shop for Furniture

Sturdy furniture on the deck can ensure optimal relaxation this summer. Think about what the space is used for. Is it more for entertaining or quiet times alone and with family? If your house is the place to be for parties and events, make sure there is plenty of comfortable seating available for guests. If you’re looking to have more of a peaceful area, choose light and airy pieces such as hammocks or chaise lounges.

Light it Up

Mild summer nights make for some of the best memories, so add a touch of sparkle with decorative outdoor lights. Whether you choose string lights, track lighting or anything in between, be sure that the lights are safely installed and won’t pose a fire hazard.

Create Shade

If you’re ready to make an investment, add an awning to the back of your home for protection from the hot sun. A large umbrella is another great option and can be moved to various spots since it isn’t a permanent fixture.

Add Color

Simple pops of color can take your deck to the next level. If you have a mostly neutral palette throughout the area, add some bright flowerpots to lighten things up. Colorful fabrics such as seat cushions are a good way to incorporate color as well. Don’t forget about seasonal decorations!

Your deck should be both fun and functional. Invest in the things that will last and will create an enjoyable summer outside for you and your family.
