Can you remember the last time the refrigerator and freezer were deep cleaned? It is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, so it is very important to keep it cleaned regularly. Since the holidays are quickly approaching, you will want to have a fresh space to store leftovers and prepared meals. We have a few tips on giving the fridge a good, solid clean and keeping up with it on a regular basis.

Start with the freezer.

Take inventory of everything in the freezer and toss any food items with freezer burn or that have passed the expiration date. Wipe the entire inside of the freezer with a cleaning spray and warm, damp cloth to remove any stains or loose food.

Freshen the fridge.

Crisper drawers are especially important to keep clean, since fresh food is constantly stored there. You will want to maintain these at least once a month but it is better to wipe them down weekly. As with the freezer, be sure to throw away food that is expired or spoiled. For a cheap and easy cleaning solution that is sure to remove nasty odors quickly, mix a spray bottle with half vinegar and half water. Remove all of the shelves in the fridge and wipe down the base with a cleaning solution, then use a glass cleaner for glass shelves and place them back in.

Tackle the exterior.

Dust, dirt and crumbs can easily pile up around and under the refrigerator if they are not maintained. When you clean out the inside, be sure to pull the fridge away from the wall and clean around and under as well. Clear out any cobwebs or dust and vacuum up loose crumbs. Wipe down the exterior of the fridge as well to remove fingerprints or stuck-on food.

Maintain freshness.

Baking soda is a great deodorizer for refrigerators. Pop a box inside of the door to keep odors at bay and lower stress when conducting your routine cleaning!

Cleaning anything in the kitchen can be a daunting task, but once it is worked into a routine it will be much easier to tackle next time around.
