How to Stay Motivated as the Days Get Shorter

As summer ends, so do the extended sunlight hours that heighten our serotonin and energy. One of the tell-tale signs of fall is shorter daylight and it can bring a sense of gloom, making you want to go to bed early and get nothing done. If you struggle with productivity during colder months, here are a few ways to make the most of your time and stay motivated.

Get a good amount of sleep.

Getting enough sleep is always a struggle even though it’s crucial to our overall health. Juggling work, social life, family and everything else can make it seem like there isn’t enough time in the day and sleep is typically the first thing to be compromised. Try to shift your focus and aim for a solid 6-8 hours of sleep per night. It’ll make your days much better!

It may sound draining to even hear the word, but exercising can actually boost your mood, help your sleep cycle, and sharpen focus. Exercising releases endorphins, also known as the feel-good chemical in our brains. Your energy and overall stamina will be increased even with a small 30-minute workout. Take a walk during your lunch break or turn on a cardio video at the beginning of the day after you’ve had your morning coffee.

Reserve the comfy clothes for rest times.

This is especially important if you’re working from home. No matter your work situation, get up and get dressed for the day. A cozy sweater and pajama pants will make you want to stay in bed and sleep. If you dress like you’re going to sleep, your productivity will be significantly lower than dressing professionally and ready for the day.

Unplug after work.

Constant blue light from computers, smartphones and other devices mean your brain is always receiving “stay awake” signals. To help you wind down better for a restful night, leave your phone on the counter when you get home and spend time with friends and family.

Plan fun experiences.

Book a fall mountain adventure or pumpkin-carving party that will give you something to look forward to. This will motivate you to get work done during the day with a reward at the end of the week or month. Celebrate a new season with a fun trip instead of curling up in bed every chance you have.

By taking these measures to relax your mind and body, you’ll have sharper focus during the day when it matters most. Don’t let the chilly temperatures and early darkness throw you off- stay on track!
