The month of July is known for many things- Independence Day, back-to-school preparation and vacations, to name a few. However, it is also Independent Retailer Month and has been for the last 10 years. In 2011, two individuals came together to create recognition for independent retailers and highlight their roles in the communities and economies they are a part of.
Independent Retailer Month aims to encourage consumers to shop local and create a positive impact on the economy both locally and nationally. The pandemic in 2020 reminded us all how important small businesses are and how much our support means in keeping them afloat. While July is a great place to start in celebrating the impact of small businesses, it is encouraged to shop with them year-round.
Are you a small business owner? Spread the word about Independent Retailer Month in marketing campaigns and specials in your store. Here are a few ideas to promote your business:
Create a coupon or punch card for frequent customers. For example, they could receive a $10 gift card for every $100 purchase they make. If you have an online storefront, you could offer free shipping or a discount on certain items.
In-store events are always a fun way to bring traffic to your business. You can gather other local vendors such as bakeries or coffee shops to provide treats while customers look around.
Donate to charities to continue helping the community. Offer to donate a certain percentage of proceeds during July to a local charity that holds a special place in your heart.
Create social media posts and flyers highlighting your business and encouraging consumers to support you. If you are running specials or coupons, be sure to include them.
If you are a consumer, make an effort to support small businesses when possible before automatically going to a big-box retailer. If you are hosting a cookout or party with friends or family, consider getting treats from a local bakery. If you need a new outfit for vacation, stop by your local boutique before ordering online from a large company.
Celebrating Independent Retailer Month can lead to growth for small businesses and can make a huge impact on your local economy. This will lead to job sustainability and resilience for your community. If you don’t typically shop small, start now and get to know your local businesses.
