July is a bittersweet month. It is the height of summer with vacations booming, but it is also time to prepare to head back to school. While it may be easy to soak up the sun and avoid the thought of going back to school, preparing now can ease the process when August rolls around. Here are a few things to remember this month to be sure your students are ready for a strong return to school in the fall. 

Shop for supplies early. 

Stores are typically slammed in the beginning of August. If you have an idea of the supplies your child may need, go ahead and grab them during the summer. You will have peace of mind knowing that the supply list is taken care of and you can avoid the last-minute crowds. 

Read, read, read. 

Summer reading doesn’t need to be viewed as a chore. It can be fun with rewards and is a great way to pass time on the beach or by the pool. Check your local library to see if they are running any summer reading programs- they typically have prizes for successful completions! It’s a great way to keep motivation up and stay ready to read when school comes back around. 

Re-adjust sleep schedules. 

Bedtimes typically aren’t strict during the summer and it can be difficult to get back on track when it’s time to get back to school. Use the last few weeks of July to adjust bedtime schedules and avoid grogginess on the first day back. Depending on how late bedtime has been pushed back during the summer, move the time up by a few minutes every couple of nights to be fully adjusted and refreshed for the start of the new year. 

Stay socialized. 

Whether your child has friends around from the previous school year or they are starting fresh, it’s good to keep them around other children their age during the summer. You can schedule play dates at local parks, swim together at local or neighborhood pools, or invite them over for activities at home. This is especially important for younger-aged children as they keep a fresh perspective on sharing and playing well together. 

Take time to help your child(ren) sort through their feelings about the upcoming year and do your best to prepare them for success. Spend enough time preparing that it is something they can look forward to instead of a last-minute feeling of dread.
